What is a Scene?

Definition

A Scene is a fundamental building block of your Living Story. It represents a single unit of narrative content that users will experience as they progress through your story.

Purpose

Scenes serve multiple purposes:

  • Content Delivery: Present narrative text, dialogue, or descriptions
  • Scope: Scope the narrative to a specific place and time, or moment

Scene Structure

Content

Each scene can contain:

  • Title: A brief identifier (often in screenplay format)
  • Text: The main narrative content, including descriptions and dialogue
  • Position: Location within a sequence and the flow of the story
  • Influences: Interaction moments defined within the scene
  • Conditional Logic: Optional content that depends on results of influences and interactions

Scene Types

Standard Scenes

Regular narrative scenes that always appear when reached.

Conditional Scenes

Scenes that only appear based on:

  • User choices
  • Variable values
  • Interaction results
  • Story state

How Scenes Fit in Stories

Scenes are organized into Sequences, which are linear series of scenes. Sequences can branch and connect based on user interactions, creating the interactive narrative flow.

Adding Scenes

The first scene is added by default and can't be deleted asi it is the entry point of your narrative. There are two ways you can continue your story.

  1. Create a new scene within the sequence by clicking on the + button next to the scene and selecting "Scene Block".
  2. Create new scene from the button in the toolbar. This will create a new loose sequence that you can place anywhere and later connect to your story.
